WICKWAR - In the early to mid 1800's the Wickwar gang burgled, robbed, and plundered their way across South Gloucestershire striking fear in to the hearts of the local population. In 1826 a concerted effort was made to bring the gang members to justice. Much of the evidence was on the word of one man, Thomas Mills, who turned King's Evidence, denouncing members of the gang, even his own family, of who his brother was one of the members to be hung at Gloucester Gaol. Needless to say the other gang members were bitter and enraged at his duplicity. Two of them, the Dyer brothers, vowed to take revenge. But it did not go well, and they were then captured and charged with Thomas Mills attempted murder. Whether they had in fact committed the act however, or that the evidence against them was is also a matter of conjecture.
All the historical details in this book, novelising the story, are as correct as they possibly can be. All people thementioned were actual people at the time. Naturally a storytellers licence has been used to narrate the tale.
